Workman Takes 5th Overall as Chargers Open at Mount Mercy

The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team started its season with a third-place finish in the Mount Mercy Early Bird Classic on Sunday at Hunters Ridge.
Sandburg shot 358 as a team, finishing behind the host Mustangs (324) and Viterbo (341). The Chargers tied Mount Mercy B and defeated Lincoln (503) in the five-team invite.
Sophomore Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) shot an 11-over-par 83 to pace Sandburg and finish fifth overall. Sophomore Madison Newton (Erie, Ill./Erie) carded an 86, and freshman Kelli Kennedy (Henry, Ill./Henry-Senachwine) also posted a top-10 round, tying for 10th with an 88.
Elizabeth Whitford (Dahinda, Ill./Galva) rounded out Sandburg’s score with a 101, and Rylee Liles (Hennepin, Ill./Putnam County) added a 105 in her Chargers debut.

Sandburg plays in the Augustana Highland Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Highland Springs in Rock Island. Saturday’s first round starts at 1 p.m., followed by a 9 a.m. start Sunday.
